What is the difference between AS 2001 and AS 4878 fabric tests?

You will note that much of our technical data for the Coated PVC Range and Polyfabric range now includes fabric tests according to AS 4878.

These new test standards are in line with standardising our test methodologies according to International Standard Organisation (ISO) tests. In many instances the Australian Standards (AS) tests AS 2001 were based on British Standards (BS) tests. Most of these British Standards tests are also being normalised with relevant ISO tests.

Please find following a summary of the relevant AS 4878 tests and their identical ISO equivalent:

  • AS 4878.2-2001: Methods of test for coated fabrics - Determination of length, width and net mass
    Equivalent Standard ISO 2286-1:1998
  • AS 4878.5-2001: Methods of test for coated fabrics - Determination of bursting strength
    Equivalent Standard ISO 3303:1990
  • AS 4878.6-2001: Methods of test for coated fabrics - Determination of tensile strength and elongation at break
    Equivalent Standard ISO 1421:1998
  • AS 4878.7-2001: Methods of test for coated fabrics - Determination of tear resistance
    Equivalent Standard ISO 4674:
  • AS 4878.8-2001: Methods of test for coated fabrics - Determination of coating adhesion
    Equivalent Standard ISO 2411:2000
    BS3424 9B (not identical)
  • AS 4878.9-2001: Methods of test for coated fabrics - Determination of resistance to damage by flexing
    Equivalent Standard ISO 7854:1995

In many instances the DIN & BS standards may be very similar to the ISO standards, but because of different sampling, conditioning and even the way peak loads are measured, we can not claim that they are ‘exactly the same’ or equivalent.
Where comparison between different test methodologies is required (eg. ASTM, DIN etc) we highly recommend that the individual test processes are carefully examined to explain any variations in the reported results.
